Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick admits they'll finish the season trophyless.

Rangnick admits United blew their best chance of winning a trophy this season after suffering a shock FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough on penalties.

"Yes, of course, but this is hypothetical," he said.

"There are still quite a lot of other top clubs involved in the competition (Champions League), there are still 16 top clubs involved.

"Quite apart from that, of course everybody could see how seriously we prepared the team for this game (against Middlesbrough).

"We desperately wanted to win. But we were not clinical enough and we did not score enough goals. This is a game that in normal circumstances you are 3-0 up at half-time.

"But it didn't happen. We weren't the only ones, by the way. There were quite a few other teams like Chelsea and West Ham who had problems against lower division teams.

"We didn't win or proceed and that was the worst part of it. It's not so much about maybe this would been the best chance to get some silverware.

"Now it's high time to look ahead and make the best out of the situation."

If United do not go on to lift this season's Champions League title at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg in May, the club would be in the midst of their worst trophy drought since the club was last relegated, 48 years ago.

They were relegated from the old first division in the 1973-74 season, before being immediately promoted again.
