Ajax refused to meet Tottenham's asking price for Steven Bergwijn on deadline day yesterday.

De Telegraaf says Spurs were prepared to sell the Holland international on Monday and were seeking €26m to part with him.

Ajax made a bid of €22m in the morning, but after being informed that Spurs would not compromise on their valuation, the Dutch decided to withdraw from the negotiating table.

Ajax had hoped to sign Bergwijn as a replacement for David Neres after his move to Shakhtar Donetsk.

For his part, Spurs manager Antonio Conte has insisted publicly he wanted to keep hold of the attacker.
