FRANCE Ambassador to Malaysia, Roland Galharague, praised Sabah for leading the rest of Malaysia in aspiring to be a plastic neutral beacon in Asean.
“Let me congratulate Sabah for leading, as it is ahead of the rest of Malaysia. Let me also commend Kota Kinabalu for this excellent initiative and commend Blu Hope for organising this Special Education and Awareness event on Sabah Plastic Neutral,” he said, at the launch of the joint initiative, which also involved the Daily Express.
“This is a very long-term project, a very difficult project. We are very keen to support, I am quite happy to announce that the French Embassy will make a small grant, a small donation to Blu Hope,” he said.
Galharaque expressed regret that the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Malaysia could not be present at the event. France is the new chair of the EU since January.
“We have launched with the European Investment Bank the Green Ocean Initiative with 4 billion euros funding available for initiatives like this one,” he said.
The EU’s plastics strategy aims to transform the way plastic products are designed, produced, used and recycled in the EU as part of the EU’s circular economy action plan and builds on existing measures to reduce plastic waste.
The plastics strategy is a key element of Europe’s transition towards a carbon neutral and circular economy. It will contribute to reaching the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Climate Agreement objectives and the EU’s industrial policy objectives, that Galharague called on all states to do more to meet their commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement objectives.
