Tottenham's contract chiefs almost cocked up their deadline day deal for Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur by sending his team Luis Diaz's forms, it has been revealed.

Spurs battled Liverpool for Diaz, with the former Porto star eventually signing for the latter.

Uruguay midfielder Bentancur moved to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a permanent deal, while Juve teammate Dejan Kulusevski's switch is a loan with an option to buy.

However, Record says Bentancur's lawyers received a contract which still bore Diaz's name.

The misstep left "a lot of people surprised," journalist Sergio Krithinas noted while discussing Spurs' deadline day business.

Bentancur has since described joining Spurs as "a pleasure and an honour," and has now linked up with his teammates off the back of a World Cup qualifying goal against Venezuela.
