It never ceases to amaze me how an easy and straightforward task could feel so impossible for the younger generation to complete, and the answer is simpler than I expected.
If you’re from the millennial generation, such as myself, you probably would’ve heard many times from the older generation that “Technology has made your life easier in comparison to us who weren’t born with it.”
Well, I think it’s the exact opposite of it. Come to think of it, the technology itself was probably one of the most prominent reasons to explain why millennials are always so exhausted.
With technology, we are now expected to accomplish so much more than the older generation because, well, technology has “helped make our lives easier.”
We also have to be mentally prepared for any on-call work, even on holidays, because we are now ‘easily connected’ with technology. This has been exceptionally true, especially since the start of the pandemic, where everyone, the older generation included, has gotten used to the norm of working from home.
Working from home with the help of technology may seem futuristic and help both the bosses and the workers to save each of their respective time. However, some of us have forgotten that the working hour is ONLY between 8.30 AM and 6.30 PM. Yes, haven’t you noticed that it’s no longer 9 – 5?
Even our parents would admit that before technology was so advanced, once they’re off from work, it means that they’re off from work. There are no emergency calls, works, messages whatsoever.
Receiving work calls and messages at night with the expectation for us to reply and do the work under the name of ‘urgent’ requests is probably why technology isn’t exactly great for our mental health.
It’s no wonder that we’ve entered the Great Resignation Era. Because quitting their jobs is now the only way they know how to take a break. A real break, with no one disturbing you.
There’s no doubt that our smartphones and social media distractions have also drained some part of our mental strengths. However, not having the peace of mind after working hours can really cause people, not just millennials, but people, to burn out.
