Despite the increase in demand, especially with the rising number of Covid-positive cases, the price of RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction), or PCR, tests remain expensive and inaccessible to many.

While self-test kits are sold from about RM5.50, PCR tests where one’s nose and throat are swabbed by professionals, typically start from RM180 in the Klang Valley. In some places, the price can go up to RM300. Unfortunately, this pricey option is still the most accurate method to test for and confirm the presence of coronavirus.

When asked “Do you think the price of Covid-19 PCR test should be reduced?” 94.44% of 8,000 respondents said “Yes” and indicated that they would test more frequently if it was lower.

Only 5.56% say that the price of PCR tests are reasonable.

In the comments, most people suggested that PCR tests should range from RM20 to RM80. Another person said that the price of PCR tests should be standardized among healthcare providers, as different locations currently conduct Covid-19 tests at different prices.
