Kota Kinabalu: Amirah Syahirah Azlan won a gold medal for the State in the 40th National Senior Karate Championship 2022, which concluded at MPJS Stadium, Selangor on Sunday.

The 21-year-old from Keningau, who was the sole representative from Sabah Karate Association (SKA), ruled supreme in the female kumite below 68kg category.

SKA secretary general Julian Chin when contacted on Monday said they are proud of the national athlete’s achievement.

“We are extremely proud of her performance despite the problem faced by us due to the short notice given to all the affiliates on the competition date.

“We were supposed to send a full team to the competition but because eighty per cent of our athletes were affected by the (Covid-19) virus through close contact, we had no choice but to abandon the trip as a safety precaution.

“Therefore only Amirah, who is based in Bukit Jalil as a national athlete, was able to participate and Danny Fredoline was the only coach appointed to accompany her,” he said.

Meanwhile, he hoped to have more competitions for the State athletes before the start of the Sukma Games in Kuala Lumpur later this year.

“We are hoping our athletes can compete in more competitions to gauge their standard in preparation for the Sukma Games.

“The squad is yet to be finalised and at the moment we are still unsure of any tournament that we may be able to participate in the foreseeable future.”
