There was always a threat that Sevilla, who have the Europa League a record six times, would find a way to hit back.
They didn't do so before the 90 minutes were up, leaving extra-time to play.
Much to the joy of the home crowd, David Moyes' side found the winner with eight minutes remaining.
Pablo Fornals unleashed an excellent shot but was denied by Bono, only for the rebound to fall to Andriy Yarmelenko.
The Ukrainian star sparked emotional scenes when he finished calmly to win the game for West Ham and book their place in the last eight.
