Former Manchester City and USA star Claudio Reyna accepts fellow American Jesse Marsch faces a massive challenge at Leeds United.
Marsch is yet to pick up a first point as Leeds manager after replacing Marcelo Bielsa.
Reyna said, "A stigma does exist [about players and coaches from the United States].
"There is a collective support for Jesse Marsch to do well because it is good for football in the US.
"We have come a long way, it is certainly better than it was 15 or 20 years ago but a stigma does exist. We have a chip on shoulders and want to continue to push the sport along.
"Jesse Marsch is in a difficult situation, he is following a legend in Marcelo Bielsa who had a particular style of play. It's going to be interesting to see how Jesse tries to unwind from that."
