Dangerous driving: Lorry driver pleads not guilty

Kota Kinabalu: A 29-year-old driver was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here with dangerous driving which caused the death of a food delivery rider in Penampang, last year.

Azlan Mohd Salem pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to driving a lorry in a dangerous manner and causing the death of motorcyclist Jimmy Masadim, 33, at 1.35pm, on July 1, 2021 at old Papar road, near the factory of Quality Broadway Sdn Bhd.

The court set April 18 for pre-trial case management and released Azlan on a bail of RM1,500 in two sureties.

Azlan was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act which carries a jail term of between two years and 10 years and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000 if convicted.

Traffic prosecuting officer Inspector Mohammad Khairul Nizam Mokhtar prosecuted.

Meanwhile, a man was fined RM2,000 or two months’ jail for having gambling paraphernalia.

Lai Kat Phin admitted before

Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to having an illegal lottery ticket at 5.05pm on Oct 15, last year at Taman Kolombong in Inanam.

The court heard that the police, who went to the said place following tip-off, detained a man, later identified as Lai who behaving suspiciously, and seized gambling paraphernalia including RM130 cash and a handphone.

Lai was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953, which carries a jail term of up to six months or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

Inspector Albert Basiri prosecuted.
