Former Olympique Marseille goalkeeper coach Dominique Bernatowicz has recalled the struggles of Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy with the French giants.
Mendy played for OM reserves for a year before being released into semi-pro football.
Bernatowicz told RMC Sport: "The arrival of Edouard Mendy at OM? It was a bit of a coincidence.
"It is thanks to Ted Lavie that the first contact was made. He phoned me telling me that there was an exceptional goalkeeper that I had to see. I said to myself that if he called me to speak to me about this boy, it was that the game was worth the candle.
"We were looking for a goalkeeper who could train with the professionals, with the centre or to play in the CFA with the reserves. Coincidentally, Ted Lavie called me saying he had his friend Edouard who was in trouble, without a club, but with potential.
"He would have come for nothing. He would have come on foot or running to try it out, because he was really in trouble.
“With me and with José Anigo (former Marseille manager), it matched immediately and that's how this famous Edouard came to do his trial period."
