I first got acquainted with essential oils and aromatherapy when I took on a part-time job promoting a Malaysian essential oils brand. It was quite an interesting and delightful experience. It was during that time that I felt lost in life. I was unhappy and unsure what I wanted to pursue in my career so I decided to explore a variety of part-time roles.

A good friend of mine suggested that I try out becoming a temporary promoter for Il Puro Natural during their Christmas promotion. So I jumped at the chance. Being a promoter was new to me and I was more than open to a new experience.

So I worked at the promotional stall for Il Puro that was set up in Bangsar Village shopping mall. On my very first day of work, I met the founder of the local essential oils brand Nora Saman, a short, young woman with clear, tan skin. And so began my discovery of essential oils and their many awesome benefits.

What Are Essential Oils?

So what are essential oils? Basically, essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that are often used in aromatherapy or massage therapy. In aromatherapy, basically, the various scents from different types of essential oils are diffused for their therapeutic benefits and holistic healing. You just need to get a diffuser, fill it with water and a few drops of any essential oil of your choice and you’re in for a scent-sational experience!

The types of essential oils produced out there are plenty from lavender essential oil to bergamot and geranium. Each oil is distinguished through its unique scent and specific benefits or uses. So you want to know what kind of benefits are brought about by essential oils? Here’s a non-exhaustive list:

1) Benefits for Mental Health and Sleep

Essential oils like bergamot and lavender have been discovered to be great for mental health and relaxation. Based on research, essential oils with fresh, citrusy scents like bergamot and grapefruit have been found to ease depression. If you’re anxious or stressed, lavender oil and vetiver oil are very helpful in lowering anxiety and reducing chest tightness to aid you in breathing.

If you suffer from sleep disturbances or insomnia, essential oils with woody, floral scents are recommended. Examples are vetiver oil and sandalwood oil.

2) Benefits for Immunity, Headache and Indigestion

Essential oils like eucalyptus oil and lemon oil can boost your immunity against coughs, colds and runny noses. Besides that, they double up as an air purifier perfect for cold mornings. To help with headaches, essential oils like peppermint and spearmint oil are recommended. Just apply them lightly on your temples, forehead or where the pain is most prominent.

For stomach troubles like indigestion or bloating, warming essential oils like cinnamon and cardamom are helpful. Apply them topically on your abdomen when experiencing any stomach ailments.

3) Skincare Benefits

To reap the benefits of essential oils for your skin, they should be diluted with a suitable carrier oil so they’re safe to use. Essential oils with intensive hydrating properties like rose geranium and myrrh are typically used to treat dry skin problems like eczema. Tea tree oil is the go-to oil for treating mild acne conditions like pimples, blackheads and whiteheads.

For anti-ageing, frankincense oil is used for the treatment of fine lines while carrot seed oil, known for being rich in antioxidants, is used to keep your skin smooth and stunning.

Overall, essential oils are a great addition to your self-care routine. Promoting essential oils has exposed me to a whole new world of pleasurable scents that soothe and heal. I can see why Nora, the founder of Il Puro Natural, is so passionate about these botanical treasures.
