Ah. The rainy season. Cool and a sense of calmness that comes with the naturally cold breeze. Nice to go with hot tea, coffee, chocolate and even hot soup to feel warm, getting cosy and warm under the blanket or just on the bed. To make it extra comfortable and cosy, wearing a pair of socks feels like it could complete the whole experience for a moment.

Of course, when mentioning ‘socks’, it is very commonly referred to the feet but did you know that wearing socks is not just limited to just the feet? I know, it sounds quite perplexing. It sounds as if the natural order of what the socks were made to be has been altered into something very out of the blue. Just what is this abomination? Socks can be worn and used other than for the feet?

Believe it or not, yes.

Truthfully at first, I did not think this far to be possible when it came to what such an additional add-on for a fashion article could do. You have a glove that is meant for the hands, you have T-shirts meant for the upper body and you have the pants for the lower body – sounds like a really simple order of getting clothed or dressed.

It was only years ago when I first got my youngest kitten, the seventh kitten which was a stray who got found by my parent at their workplace, to keep the little kitten warm, I ran out of small towels to use and decided to grab one of the big socks I have and put it around the kitten. The kitten fit so nicely into the sock that it would make you wonder if the sock really does come in handy and the little one has been very comfortable sleeping in the sock since the day we first took him.

The thing about having cats is also to get used to their mischief of being ‘sock thieves’ so believe me when I say it’s quite the norm to lose a pair or have mismatched socks. So it cannot be helped but to make do with creative adjustments.

But that was only just one way to use the sock. Here are other ways to use the socks (other than for your feet):

Wear them as gloves (substitute or not)

There was this fashion Instagrammer whom I followed for her unique styling tips when it comes to anime theme fashion. In her recent posting, she wore these really nice looking dark coloured gloves so when she was asked in the comments where she got the gloves from, she said they are actually socks that she cut out for gloves.

I find it really cool and it gave me this huge sense of inspiration to try it out myself as I love wearing gloves and I’m really not a big fan of wearing socks unless I’m going out but even for the feet, I am more of a sandals person as this is mostly easier when it comes to my disability.

It’s definitely a fun way to utilize socks, considering that there is more variety of designs for socks than there are gloves and socks are usually much cheaper to get than gloves – which is not so surprising since taking into account the kind of climate we are in, socks are more useful than gloves.

But hey, never too late to try something new!

Can’t wait for Christmas to stuff stuff into the Christmas stockings? Just grab a sock or two!

I did this in a hurry when I could not find my small coin purse so I had to just grab the nearest object that seemed closest to its usefulness as a small container bag so, by a glance, I decided to grab a sock. A clean one, of course.

Suffice to say, if I had not grabbed that sock and spent more time solving the mystery of the missing coin purse, I would have probably been more than thirty minutes late just to get prepared to head out of the house.

It was very convenient and timely, although I did have to keep remembering that socks are usually meant for the feet but sometimes when desperate times call for desperate measures, you cannot be too picky with the available options.

Don’t underestimate the use of the sock to hold things for you!

Got a hot beverage but no cup sleeve? (Clean) sock to hold your hot cup!

As weird as it sounds, it’s the same kind of repurposing as the first idea of cutting socks to make a glove. But instead of cutting the sock to fit like a glove, you can also use it as a cup sleeve!

Although to be frank, this idea will really depend as well on the size of the cup. The last time I tried this, I had to get a mismatched sock that could stretch as wide enough to fit the mug and when it could stretch wide enough, it also did not thin out too much to hold the hot cup.

It’s not a bad idea but it still takes some consideration into adjustment so it is not entirely that flexible like the first two ideas.

Still, worth trying!

I’m pretty sure there are many fun, creative and practical ways to make use of mismatched socks and it’s fun to explore them. Plus, they are quite affordable to try new ideas out of them. Not that I want to encourage you to spend needlessly just on socks but this is also one of the good ways to learn how to reuse and repurpose available items in your household.

Keep yourself and your feet warm with good socks, and keep the socks to multiple uses to try this rainy season!
