KUALA LUMPUR – Young swimmer from Kuala Lumpur Khiew Hou Yean continued his excellent pace to top the men’s 100 metre (m) freestyle event at the 64th Malaysian Open Championships at the National Aquatics Centre today.
The 19-year-old clocked in at 50.35 seconds (s) - his best personal record - to emerge champion, and surpassed the qualifying time to Category B for the World Championships, which is 50.48s.
The victory also saw Hou Yean once again beat Olympian and national record holder Welson Sim, who grabbed silver (51.11s), while Ng Shin Jian Terrence (51.52s) from Selangor took home the bronze.
“I feel very good and happy today because I managed to improve my personal best by 0.7s, it’s a pretty big gap and I feel it’s pretty good for today,” he told Bernama after the event.
On the first day of the tournament yesterday, Hou Yean won two golds in the men’s 400m freestyle and 4x100 relay medley with Khiew Tze Yean, Jayden Tan Khai Xin and Yap Min Shun.
Meanwhile, national swimmer Phee Jing En, who represented Selangor, emerged the women’s 200m breaststroke champion with a time of 2:38.16s, beating Johor swimmer Rouxin Tan (2: 41.86s) and Low Ee Mang (2: 43.96) from Selangor.
Jing En won gold in the 100m breaststroke event yesterday.
Meanwhile, two swimmers in the 400m individual medley - Jayden Tan Khai Xin (4:26.16s) from Selangor and Lim Shun Qi (4:31.08s) from Melaka qualified for Category B (4:32.53s) of the Hanoi SEA Games. – Bernama, March 5, 2022
