Miguel Almiron scored his first goal for Newcastle United since February 2021 to lift his side over Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

The Magpies have now equalled Sir Bobby Robson's record from 2004 with six consecutive wins in the Premier League.

It all came from Almiron, who latch onto Bruno Guimaraes' lofted pass after 32 minutes.

The Paraguayan winger still had plenty to do on the right wing, but he managed to conjure a magnificent shot to evade Vicente Guaita.

Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin also came close to beating Guaita in a first-half dominated by the home side.

Palace showed greater fight in the second stanza and almost equalised when Wilfried Zaha dragged narrowly wide of Martin Dubravka's right-hand post.

Patrick Vieira's side drop to 14th after suffering back-to-back league defeats for the first time in 2022.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have all but sealed their safety as they move 15 points clear of 18th-placed Burnley.

Speaking after the game, manager Eddie Howe said: "It was a very good first half. With the ball and in terms of our intensity, it was up there with one of our best performances. In the second half Crystal Palace came back into it, but we defended very well.

"We've had a very good shape. The players have developed a good mentality to defending, and I think we needed to because Palace played well.

"It's a great night for the football club. You can forget how hard it's been to get us into this position now. We have to look back with great satisfaction.

"I say it every week but this is a great place to play football. The all-round atmosphere was brilliant to experience."
