AS says Villa scouts made a check on Atletico Madrid midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia last week.
And last night, Villa boss Steven Gerrard was in attendance for Marseille's win against Nantes to check on Boubacar Kamara. Accompanying Gerrard was chief exec Christian Purslow and sporting director Johan Lange.
Atletico are also keen - as a replacement for Kondogbia.
Kamara comes off contract at Marseille in June.
