Kota Kinabalu: A 24-year-old man claimed trial at the High Court here, Friday, for the murder of a man in Tuaran two years ago.

Arnold Liew Kim Choi was accused of committing the crime against one Liew Nyuk Shung, 65, at 2.30pm on June 17, 2020 in a house at Kg Bantayan Tamparuli in Tuaran.

Kim Choi pleaded not guilty before Judicial Commissioner Amelati Parnell after the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code was read out to him.

The charge carries a mandatory death sentence on conviction.

The court set Sept 5-9 this year for trial and also fixed June 27 for case management.

Pending the date, Kim Choi was ordered to be further remanded as the charge against him has no provision for bail.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammed Ali Imran prosecuted while the accused was represented by counsel Ronny Cham.

In another case, a 38-year-old woman was fined RM800 or one week jail for having gambling paraphernalia.

Hadijah Burhanudin pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to having two tickets written with Wahui riddle gambling numbers at 5.10pm on July 25, 2021 behind premises at Taman Indah Permai, Jalan Sepanggar.

The offence, under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act, carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

The court was informed by the prosecution that Hadijah was arrested by a police team, who went to the place following a tip-off on illegal gambling activity.

The gambling paraphernalia found on Hadijah was also seized, said the prosecution.

Inspector Navind Kumar Vijayan prosecuted.
