Fire razes Semporna settlement, 900 people evacuated

KOTA KINABALU – A fire razed over 100 houses at a temporary settlement in Semporna last night, leaving 900 people homeless.

The fire happened at around 11.34pm in Kg Bangau-Bangau and was brought under control after an hour, the Fire and Rescue Department said.

There were no casualties reported.

The affected residents have been evacuated to a shelter at the Semporna youth and sports hall, and more are expected to arrive today, according to the state disaster committee.

The temporary settlement at Kg Bangau-Bangau was opened in 2017 to house victims of an earlier fire. – The Vibes, April 21, 2022
