It was an unusual weekend for me, binge-watching a series that I thought I would never enjoy on Netflix, “The Bold Type”. To my surprise, I started liking the series more than I thought and realised that the three leading characters in the series, Jane, Sutton and Kat, connected with me in one way or another. In my perspective, the characters were written in a way to convey a message on how to be bold in different ways and in ways we all can relate to.

Jane: The bold type who faces her fears
We all have our own fears and are too scared to even think of them sometimes. It could be as simple as the fear of heights, fear of public speaking or as big as the fear of facing the truths in life. Now, the last one is a fear for most if not all. More often than not, we catch ourselves in denial despite knowing what the truth is because not all truths are beautiful; some are ugly and messy. In Jane’s case, it was two things; her health condition and her relationship with Ryan. However, only when she accepted the truth, she could make decisions for the best of the interest of her physical and mental health. Often enough, we get embroiled in the argument of ‘what ifs’ in our head if we were to accept the truths but only the acceptance of truth will set us free and help us move on.
Sutton: The bold type who fights for what she wants
A go-getter, that is who Sutton is. Fear of failure is what stops many of us from pursuing our dreams or passion but Sutton is a testimony of why we should take the plunge. Life does not always present oneself with an opportunity but when it does we should be bold enough to fight for it. Sutton fights for her dream career, for the man she loves and for the life she wants even if that means sacrificing one other thing that is valuable to her. Half of the battle is won when you know what you want, but to be able to fight for your wants can be challenging. It is a constant struggle for many to pick between our passion and obligation but if we could for one moment, be as bold as Sutton to fight for our dream, perhaps things will be different, and better.
Kat: The bold type who fights for what is right
We all have at least once engaged in a conversation that involves the public’s interest in what is right on political, societal and moral grounds. Nevertheless, very frequently it ends as a conversation. Kat is a character that goes beyond the conversation. For whatever that she deems right (though it might contradict our beliefs or conscience), she fights for it even if that means her job is at stake. Understandably, not everyone has the privilege of putting their career or safety at stake but the biggest changes socially happen when conversations are turned into actions by someone like Kat. To stand your ground and fight for what is right is a different kind of courage especially when we are going against an institution that is much stronger and more powerful, but it certainly is not impossible. Perhaps, that is how a revolution begins.
We are all part of Jane, Sutton and Kat in different circumstances in our lives. These girls are not extraordinary people but ordinary girls who decided to be bold enough to beat their fears, make mistakes and live fully. They could be fictional characters but if we look close enough, they reflect the daily struggles and challenges that we face day in and day out. While I was watching the series, I had a sense that I was living vicariously through the characters. So now tell me, are you Jane, Sutton or Kat?
