Kota Kinabalu: A supermarket was fined a total of RM9,000 for having for sale hand sanitisers which were not registered under the Health Ministry and had no labels.
The court imposed the sentence on a local supermarket after its representative admitted to three charges against the company.
On the first count, the company was ordered to pay RM3,000 in default three months’ jail for having unregistered hand sanitisers which was 15 units of Theason Alcohol-Based Handrub 200ml at 11.20am on Sept 9, 2020 at a commercial centre in Papar.
On the second count, the company was fined another RM3,000 or three months’ jail for having for sale the same items – 198 units of the same brand of sanitisers the same day.
The offence, under Regulation 7 (1)(a) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetic Regulations 1984, carries a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, on conviction.
On the third count, the company was ordered to pay another RM3,000 fine or three months’ jail for having 83 units of EC505 Hand Sanitisers 50ml without labels.
During mitigation, the company’s representative asked for leniency.
However, the prosecution urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence.
