TAWAU: The Marine Police Force (PPM) foiled an attempt to smuggle out 60 boxes of cooking oil, with each containing 240 of 5.5-litre bottles, worth about RM48,400 including the boat, in the waters of Log Pond, here, Thursday.
PPM Region 4 Commanding Officer DSP Ridzauddin Selamat said the 52-year-old local suspect, who was the boat captain, was arrested.
“The boat was intercepted for inspection on suspicion of transporting cooking oil without a permit from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).
“The cooking oil on the boat is believed to be smuggled out to a neighbouring country,” he said.
He added that the suspect and seized items were handed over to KPDNHEP for further action and investigations under the Control of Supply Act 1961.
