Paulus Firman leaves BAM

KUALA LUMPUR – National mixed doubles and men’s doubles coach Paulus Firman will be parting ways with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) effective May 1, 2022.

In a statement, BAM confirmed that the Indonesian decided not to renew his contract and leave the national setup to be with his family.

“BAM would like to express its gratitude to Paulus for his contribution to the mixed doubles and men’s doubles departments' achievements since he returned to Malaysia in 2018,” read the statement.

Paulus first joined BAM as the men’s doubles coach in 2013 but he left a year later to be chief coach of the Philippines national team. He then returned to BAM in 2018.

The 53-year-old, who is the latest head coach to leave the national setup, expressed his gratitude “to have had the opportunity to serve the national team for the past four years.

“For me, my family has to be the most important thing. This is just about taking a break from the sport and spending more time with my parents, my family and kids.”

Meanwhile, women’s doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky thanked Paulus for his significant role in both the mixed doubles and men’s doubles departments.

“Paulus has expressed that he wants to spend more time with his family in Indonesia. He leaves with the sincerest thanks from everyone at the BAM.

“We are actively identifying candidates who would be able to build on the momentum and good work laid down by Paulus,” he said. – The Vibes, April 29, 2022.
