Arsenal defender Ben White has credited his time at Southampton with helping his career.

The 24-year-old was part of Southampton's academy until the age of 16.

White moved to Brighton before earning a £50m move to the Gunners last summer and he credits Southampton with helping him become a top-level footballer.

Quizzed if the club's philosophy stays with him today, White told Ellevate (via the Daily Echo): "Yes, definitely. I was there for eight years.

"They taught me the basics of football and the details of the game from a young age, how to be professional really.

"Without all that experience I don't think I would be the same player as I am now.

"I got released at 16 and I always wanted to be a footballer so that's what I continued to do.

"My mum was with me, we got the no, and she asked me what do I want to do and I said I wanted to be a footballer – so she got on the phone to clubs next day and then got me a trial."
