KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) will revoke or suspend the licences of errant commercial transport operators who overload their vehicles.
Its chairman Datuk Chin Kim Hiung said that the board is aware and concurs with the Sabah Public Works Department’s (PWD) director Ali Ahmad Hamid that overloaded lorries are damaging roads in the state.
He said while the offence of overloading and carrying goods is dangerous under the Road Traffic Rules LN166/59, which can only be enforced by either the Royal Malaysian Police or Road Transport Department, the CVLB is not completely toothless.
“We are empowered by the CVLB Act to revoke or suspend the licence of the errant licence holder.
“Should we receive any request from police or the Road Transport Department, we will definitely look into the possibility of exercising our powers,” he said in a statement today.
Chin said commercial vehicles consist of two categories, the first being public service vehicles such as taxis, buses, and e-hailing cars ferrying passengers.
The other category is goods vehicles that are for hire or any vehicles that have a maximum permissible laden weight of 7.5 tonnes, he explained.
Last Wednesday, Ali Ahmad said that the PWD had detected vehicles overloaded with oil palm fruits and timber using certain roads, resulting in the roads being subjected to excessive pressure and subsequently, damaged quickly. – The Vibes, May 27, 2022
