Gambling: Four fined RM5,800

Kota Kinabalu: Four people were fined a total of RM5,800 by the Magistrate’s Court, Thursday, for engaging in gambling activities.

They were Faizal Haniff, 28, Nor Hidayah Jaimi, 29, Ruaina Faisal, 28, and Jonny Chung, 22, who pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to the offences.

Faizal was ordered to pay a fine of RM2,000 or three months’ jail for acting as an illegal bookie in the 2020 Euro Cup Football Championship at 2.35pm on June 29, 2021 at Tanjung Aru.

Hidayah was fined RM1,500 or two months’ jail for having two pieces of illegal lottery tickets at 5.50pm on Oct 24, 2021 at a billiard saloon in Inanam town.

Ruaina was fined RM1,300 or two months’ jail for having two slips of lottery tickets illegally at 3.50pm on March 13, this year, at a shop at Jalan Burung Keleto while Chung was fined RM1,000 or one month jail for having one lottery ticket without permit at 2.15pm on Jan 11, 2021 at Jalan Minyak Lembaga Padi, Inanam.

Faisal was charged under Section 6(3)(a) of the Betting Act 1953 which provides for a fine of between RM20,000 and RM200,000 and shall also be jailed up to five years on conviction.

Hidayah, Ruaina and Chung were charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act which carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

In another case, a 42-year-old woman was fined RM100 or one-week jail for fraudulently having RM12,640 in her bank account, last year.

Marlinah Rumantis admitted to having the money, which belonged to one Shairini Dira in her bank account between June 30, 2021 and July 2, the same year.

She had committed an offence under Section 22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance which provides for a fine of up to RM100 or up to three months’ jail, or both, on conviction. Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuted.
