
Kota Kinabalu: Two people were fined a total of RM2,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here for engaging in gambling activities.
Davey Jones Ter, 27, and Rohayati, 20, were ordered to pay a fine of RM1,000 or one month’s jail each after they pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to committing the offence.
Davey admitted to having two pieces of Wahui riddles at 11.18am on Oct 16, 2021 in front of a jewellery shop at Sinsuran here while Rohayati pleaded guilty to online gambling using a handphone at 12.30pm on April 3, 2021 in a shop at Kepayan Ridge here.
The court was informed by the prosecution that Davey was arrested by police after being spotted carrying out the activity in public while Rohayati was arrested for engaging in the online slot machine gambling activity.
Both Davey and Rohayati requested a lenient sentence through duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, who added that they committed the offence for extra income.
Davey was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act which carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction while Rohayati was charged under Section 7(2) of the same Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months’ jail, or both, on conviction.
Meanwhile, two individuals were penalised for committing drug-related offences.
Filipina Nor Sina Awil, 23, was sentenced by Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to eight months’ jail for having 0.06gm of syabu at 4.10pm on Jan 28, 2021 in Inanam and ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.
Nor was charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years’ jail, or both, on conviction.
Joey Ryan, 38, was fined RM2,000 or six months’ jail for taking syabu at 2pm on Sept 20, 2021 in Penampang as framed under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail on conviction.
