Firefighter awarded for rescuing suicidal woman at Penang Bridge

KEPALA BATAS – A firefighter who rescued a woman when he stopped her from jumping off the Penang Bridge yesterday received a certificate of appreciation in conjunction with the World Firefighters Day 2022 celebration at the Millennium Hall here today.

Muhammad Syahir Jamaludin, 31, a firefighter at the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue station, George Town said he did not expect his spontaneous act to receive the attention of many.

Recounting yesterday’s incident, Syahir said he was working the night shift at the time and was on his way back to his quarters in Georgetown from Kepala Batas, at about 3.15pm.

“At that time, I was riding a motorcycle and immediately stopped at KM3.4 towards the island when I saw the woman standing on the bank of the Penang Bridge.

“The tension was high because she did not want to be approached and threatened to jump while crying,” he said.

Syahir received a certificate of appreciation presented by Housing and Local Government Ministry Secretary-General Datuk M. Noor Azman Taib.

Syahir, who has been working as a firefighter for 12 years, said he took a few minutes to rescue the woman, with the help of members of the public.

He said the award he received today will be a source of encouragement for him to continue to work better. – The Vibes, May 22, 2022
