Kota Kinabalu: Sabah recorded 702 hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases between May 15 and 21, an increase of 111 per cent compared to the same period last year.
State Health Director Datuk Dr Rose Nani Mudin said based on the department’s monitoring, there was an increasing trend in cases since the 14th epidemiology week between April 3 and 9 until May 21.
“Although there is an increase of HFMD cases, the situation is still under control,” she said in a statement, Tuesday.
Dr Rose added that five districts that recorded the highest number of cases are Tawau (541), Sandakan (451), Lahad Datu (325), Papar (309) and Kota Belud (269).
However, there are no deaths reported and most transmissions occurred at homes and at early education centres.
“Among activities being held by the district health offices include town hall meeting sessions with agencies and early education centres to increase understanding and awareness about HFMD,” she said.
Dr Rose added a study in Vietnam and Bangladesh showed significant association between high rain distribution, humidity and the disease.
She also advised the public to take proactive measures to prevent the spread of the disease, especially with the upcoming Kaamatan Festival.
Meanwhile, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin said the Ministry will work closely with the Health ministry in addressing the HFMD issue.
Mohamad said the number of HFMD cases recorded in Sabah was considered high.
He urged parents and schools to pay attention to cleanliness and take preventive measures as recommended by the health ministry.
“We will continue to work closely with the Health Ministry and get advice from time to time so there’s no serious cases in schools.
“I’m concerned because the number of cases reported are over 2,000 but I’m sure the Health Ministry is ready. We are also prepared to face this situation,” he said when met by reporters after the Teacher’s Awards Presentation Ceremony in conjunction with the Sabah State Teachers’ Day Celebration at a hotel, here, Tuesday.
“The risk assessment would be done by the Health Ministry and not us.
“We will get their views and follow them because they are responsible for deciding if the situation is serious or not,” he added.
