Recently, there have been a number of scams which plenty of Malaysians have fallen victim to. These include employment scams as well as scammers pretending to be someone they’re not.
But, how often do you find scammers trying to get your money by asking you in person?
A Malaysian recently exposed a group of scammers who appeared to be a ‘family’ preying on unsuspecting members of the public at Genting Highlands
In a series of videos uploaded to her TikTok, @lalalanemo shared how the group of fraudsters tried to scam people of their money.
In the first video, the TikTok user exposed a couple who claimed to be from Pakistan. In the video, she wrote that the couple tried to scam people by going up to them and telling the story of how the wife lost her handbag and that they did not have any money to feed their child.
However, she pointed out that the woman did in fact have a handbag hidden underneath the baby stroller.
The couple was apparently not working alone
She urged the public not to fall victim to the couple’s sad story.
“There are 2 groups which operate the same as the couple in this video. Their outfits as well as their lies are very similar. Fortunately we were quick to realise their lies.”
In the next video, the TikTok user said that she managed to inform the couple that was approached by the scammers to not trust them and the couple managed to walk away before falling victim to the fraudsters.
Meanwhile, in the caption of her 3rd video, she claimed that the couple even asked their child to cough loudly in order to get the attention of unsuspecting bystanders.
Netizens praised her for exposing the scammers
Her videos managed to garner plenty of attention. The first video went viral after gaining 1.2 million views whilst the third video also managed to gain 1 million views.
Plenty of netizens expressed their gratitude to her for exposing the group of scammers.
“I hope that this goes viral… thank you for this information,” said a user.
Another netizen thanked her and said that they will try to get the staff of Genting Highlands to act on it.
Spotted elsewhere
Worryingly enough, a couple of netizens pointed out that they’ve either fallen victim or have been approached by the same group of scammers at various other locations.
A netizen said that the same exact thing happened to her boyfriend just last week at Bukit Bintang. “They even requested for RM500! Even though their child had a phone.”
One netizen claimed that they were approached by them at Mid Valley. “They’re seriously in Genting now? I was approached by them at Mid Valley 2 days before Raya. At the time I was sat at the entrance alone.”
“Just last week they were at i-City Shah Alam, they claimed that they were from Afghanistan to my boyfriend and said that they lost their bag,” commented another netizen.
Everyone should follow in the TikTok user’s example and do what we can to warn others whenever we notice something suspicious. Take this as a reminder not to trust everyone that comes up to you to ask for money.
