TAWAU: Marine police detained a cargo boat loaded with various controlled items and cosmetics, estimated to be worth RM161,000, in Sungai Melayu waters, here, Monday.

Tawau Maritime Zone Director Maritime Captain Shahrizan Raman said the boat’s 27-year-old local skipper was also detained after he failed to produce a permit for the goods he was carrying on the boat.

He said a team on patrol duty detected the suspicious boat heading towards Pulau Sebatik from Batu 3.

“A search on the boat found 50 LPG gas barrels, 2,400kg granulated sugar, 1,480kg frozen meat and more than 100 boxes of various types of cosmetics,” he said.

He said the skipper along with the boat and items were brought to the Tawau Maritime Jetty for further investigations.

The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967, the Control of Supply Act 1961 and the Drugs and Cosmetics Control Regulations 1984.

Meanwhile, Shahrizan said in the second quarter of 2022, the Tawau Maritime Zone made 36 arrests for various offences in 1,222 routine inspections in Tawau waters.

He said enforcement duties to combat law-breaking activities in the Malaysian Maritime Zone, especially in the Eastern waters of Sabah (Esszone), would continue to be carried out from time to time.
