Former Santos president Marcelo Teixeiera says he blocked Neymar from joining Real Madrid as a teenager.
Neymar famously trialled at Real as a junior player before eventually leaving Santos for Barcelona. Both LaLiga giants are now trying to prise the Brazilian away from PSG.
Meanwhile, Teixeiera told AS: "If he didn't go there before, it's because I stopped him with what I already told him.
"Santos' relationship with Real Madrid in our time was problematic due to the departure of Robinho. But in the end, Santos' rights were maintained and the relationship was good."
He added: "He was delighted with the Galacticos. But over time, we were able to convince the father and make a proposal that earned them $1 million. He accepted easily.
"My whole board called me crazy at that time, but we all knew that Neymar was different. Keeping him was essential for Santos.
"It was a difficult decision that I had to make alone, but the timing was right."
