Harry Kane struck twice as Tottenham saw off a stubborn Aston Villa 3-1.

Spurs looked like starting the new Premier League campaign with a defeat after John McGinn's early opener gave Villa a dream start to life back in the big time.

Tanguy Ndombele showed just why Tottenham broke their transfer record to bring him to the club with a fine leveller 17 minutes from time before Kane stole the headlines with two clinical finishes that masked a match that provided more questions than answers.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said, "We started the game well but the first goal - long ball, crazy goal - that we conceded started to change everything. I think we were a little bit confused and that is my fault because I am the manager.

"In the second half we fixed this problem and everyone saw our positions were completely different. That helped the team to control the 45 minutes.

"I was more relaxed because we had the time to score and create chances, and win the game. It was very important for us to start the season with a victory."
