
With the holy month of Ramadan is in full swing ... so I have been looking around for the the chance to make this Hari Raya Aidil Fitri celebrations best sweet moments to remember my 95 years old mother, Hajah Aminah binti Haji Mat Desa who lives with my youngest sister and family at our hometown in Taiping. Whilst walkabouts at the lower lobby of Suria KLCC, fittingly I spotted 'Tart Nenas Kayangan' (Heaven Pineapple Tart) RM2.70 per piece and a box of just 18 pieces at a price of RM50. It was a prefect cookies and to present 3 boxes of these pineapple tarts from 'heaven' for my mother in conjunction with our 'balik kampung' to celebrate this Hari Raya.
Eid al-Fitr marks the month-long fasting of Ramadan. In Malaysia, it's customary for city folks to return home to be with their parents, seek forgiveness and celebrate with good food and good company. The usual classic traditional dishes like 'lemang and ketupat' (made from rice because rice is the main staple food for the Malays) with 'rendang' (gravy) and an assortment of cookies and indigenous 'kuih' (cakes) are ever present throughout the festive season. New additions to our festive table like the 'tart nanas kayangan' (pineapple tarts from heaven) feasting together with flavourful food and drink will sure make a hit with family, relatives, and the community.
Literally, Hari Raya is a bustling Muslim festival that recognises and celebrates the demonstration of self-restraint during Ramadan, a month of fasting from sunrise to sun set. Yes, it really means the "Day of Celebration' in Malay, where Muslims spend time with their parents and families, following time-honoured traditions. Hari Raya customs that bind family and community together regardless of race, nationality or religion. It is a festival symbolising peaceful co-existence and seeking reconciliation.
