Following events in Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and China, the Asian leg of the BWF World Tour 2024 moves to Macau this week for the Macau Open 2024, which has all the elements necessary for an exciting badminton tournament.
Before we talk about it in detail, however, here are a few points you need to keep in mind:
- Dates: 24 to 29 September
- Venue: Macau, China
Contested for the first time in 2002, the Macau Open was categorised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as a Grand Prix Gold event in 2007. In 2017, the BWF updated its event structure, and from 2018 onwards, the Macau-based tournament was recognised as a World Tour Super 300 event.
So what does that mean in practice? The Macau Open shares the same status as the US Open, which is not enough to draw star shuttlers such as Viktor Axelsen, Kodai Naraoka and Prannoy HS. But does that make it a dull affair? Not at all! In fact, it gives lesser-known players an opportunity to gain invaluable points that will determine the roster for the year-end BWF World Tour Finals.
Besides the BWF points on offer, the Macau-based event will reward its victors with cash prizes as well. On that note, keep scrolling as we take a closer look at the Macau Open 2024 prize money pool, the schedule (dates) and venue of the badminton tournament and details of the live stream.
