For starters, there are multiple reasons to look forward to the latest F1 campaign. The grid will have 11 teams, 22 drivers, and five power unit manufacturers, joining the championship fight. Not only does the grid stand reset, but the cars, too, are built from scratch in accordance with the regulation changes. Simply put, it levels the field for all contenders, with each side having an equal chance to fight for the title if their challengers have a competitive bite.

What’s more, the 2026 season marks the biggest technical overhaul in the history of Formula 1. This year, F1 is leaning towards pioneering sustainable innovations and making the new generation of cars more environmentally friendly. The aim is to reduce the carbon footprint and encourage more electrically powered components in the new generation of cars.

With teams fighting the wit wars to turn the tide in their favour as the drivers fight with their elbows out to earn every point up for grabs, we cannot emphasise enough how 2026 is one of the best years to follow F1 as a fan or spectator from the sidelines.

It is important to remember that sustainability sits at the heart of all the new regulation changes this year. On that note, we take a look at the three key changes that will set the tone for the 2026 championship fight.

  • Advanced Sustainable Fuel: The cars will trade the traditional fuel component for a 100 per cent sustainable fuel this year. This green fuel variant is a mix of carbon capture, municipal waste, and non-food biomass.
  • Nimble, agile car concept: The new cars have shed 30 kilograms, with the minimum weight requirement now set at 768 kilograms. The smaller nimble car concept was introduced to support the sustainable changes and help the cars retain the speed element.
  • New power unit or engine: The new hybrid power unit operates on a 50-50 split between the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), which runs on fuel, and the battery-powered MGU-K system. Previously, the 2014 to 2025 generation of engines split the energy production between the two into an 80-20 ratio, respectively. The new power unit also simplifies the hybrid engine for new teams to develop it by removing the complex MGU-H. The MGU-H extracted power from the exhaust gases but lost its relevance in the current generation of cars.

The three key factors roughly sum up the major changes to look out for this season. However, multiple other new components like Active Aero wings, floor upgrades, and driver’s safety features have also been prioritised in the new set of regulations.

With the recent regulation changes encouraging new engine manufacturers to set foot in the motorsport, Formula 1 has successfully roped in two more automobile giants as engine manufacturers. Up until 2025, F1 had four key engine suppliers, namely Mercedes, Ferrari, Honda, and Renault. With the simplified power unit regulations, Audi and Ford have now joined the championship series as engine manufacturers. General Motors (the co-owner of the Cadillac Formula 1 Team) is also set to join the party in the near future.

There are multiple reasons why F1 benefits from having several engine manufacturers. Increased competitiveness, lesser control in the hands of a limited number of suppliers, and financial expansion are a few to begin with.

With the aforementioned sides competing in the global championship series, let us directly address the two new teams joining the grid this year: The Cadillac Formula 1 Team and the Audi Revolut F1 Team.

  • Cadillac Formula 1 Team: The American side is the 11th constructor to join the grid. The team has signed Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas for its debut outing, banking on expertise over rookie talent. We are curious to see how the endurance racing side carves an identity in the pinnacle of motorsport.
  • Audi Revolut F1 Team: The German constructor played its cards cautiously by acquiring an existing team on the grid. The endurance racing maestros took over the former Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber and retained the driver lineup comprising Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto for the F1 2026 season. While Audi has never raced in Formula 1, its predecessor, Auto Racing, raced in the pre-World War II era.

Out of the two, Audi made a strong start by scoring points at the curtain raiser in Australia. Here are all the F1 drivers currently competing in the WDC championship.

  • Alpine: Pierre Gasly (10) and Franco Colapinto (43)
  • Aston Martin: Fernando Alonso (14) and Lance Stroll (18)
  • Audi: Nico Hulkenberg (27) and Gabriel Bortoleto (5)
  • Cadillac: Valtteri Bottas (77) and Sergio Perez (11)
  • Scuderia Ferrari HP: Lewis Hamilton (44) and Charles Leclerc (16)
  • TGR Haas: Esteban Ocon (31) and Ollie Bearman (87)
  • McLaren: Lando Norris (1) and Oscar Piastri (81)
  • Mercedes: George Russell (63) and Kimi Antonelli (12)
  • Racing Bulls: Liam Lawson (30) and Arvid Lindblad (41)
  • Oracle Red Bull Racing: Max Verstappen (3) and Isack Hadjar (6)
  • Atlassian Williams: Carlos Sainz (55) and Alex Albon (23)

F1 2026 race calendar: All the track changes, potential return of old circuits, new races, and more

This year, Formula 1 made multiple race calendar changes to make room for new tracks and bid adieu to some of the old ones. The 2026 season marks the debut of the new Spanish Grand Prix at the Madrid street circuit named ‘Madring’. The new debutant will replace the Barcelona GP to become the permanent Spanish GP 2027 onwards.

The current Circuit De Catalunya in Barcelona is set to join the list of rotational tracks 2027 onwards alongside the coveted Spa-Francorchamps circuit. While the crowd favourites will return once every two years, other circuits like the Miami GP retain their spot until 2041 with the longest ever contract extension in Formula 1. The historic Imola GP has also missed out on securing a spot on the F1 calendar this year.

Not to forget the current escalated tension in the Middle East risks a potential cancellation of multiple Grand Prix races placed at the beginning of the 2026 calendar, like the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia GPs.

Here’s all you need to know about the 2026 F1 race calendar, including the new tracks debuting this year.

Sustainability and cost control in Formula 1

The pinnacle of motorsport may be a leader in technological advancements and a pioneer in automobile developments, but that unshakeable power comes bearing responsibilities. For years, F1’s loud V8, V10, and V12 engines have sounded tone deaf to the cause of environmental protection. Formula 1 has been a key contributor to carbon emissions worldwide, due to its ever increasing use of non-renewable fuel, which emits tonnes of CO2e gases on race weekends, and its logistics operations worldwide.

Realising the need to be in alignment with global sustainability standards, F1 committed to the ‘Net Zero’ initiative in 2019, pledging a 50 per cent carbon footprint reduction by 2030. The motorsport managed to reduce carbon emissions by 26 per cent by 2024- a feat achieved by race calendar adjustments, use of biofuel, sustainable aviation fuel for travel operations, and other measures.

On the other hand, the FIA and Formula One Group introduced a strict cost cap or budget cap for the teams to avoid wastage and exploitation of resources, and to level the field for all participating sides on the grid.

How will the 2026 season change the way F1 goes racing?

After witnessing one of the most closely-competitive seasons, fans, drivers, and teams alike were not very thrilled by the idea of a sustainability focused Formula 1 future. After all, it would signal the end of an era, with the motorsport being stripped of its pure race craft centric roots. With multiple factors like changed race start procedures, issues like turbo lag and the task of battery management while trying to go racing full throttle, have received severe backlash and harsh criticism from the F1 aficionados and fraternity alike.

But multiple fans have come forward to support the new regulation changes as they thoroughly enjoyed the 2026 Australian GP. Some expressed their delight at the wheel-to-wheel action delivered by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes frontman George Russell, while others were thrilled that some new teams emerged to fight for points after years of missing out on top 10 appearances on race days.

While it is too soon to pick a side, it is true that the governing body of Formula 1, too, is struggling to make the new regulations work and close all the loopholes at the earliest. While the world champions are expressing their distress, teams like Mercedes and Ferrari are basking in the podium sun. We must wait and watch if the FIA will revise the new set of regulations or continue to race ahead.

We reflect on how the 2026 season is taking cues from the 2016 campaign, how the new year is shaping up for the 2025 season’s stars, and which new teams are emerging as dominant sides in 2026.

F1 in pop culture: The best movies, TV shows, docuseries, and content you can consume in 2026

Besides the on-track action, F1 filmography in recent years has been a key contributor to the motorsport’s global recognition. While the F1 movie dominated the box office, Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive To Survive transcended into a pop-culture-defining franchise. Not only did it rope in an untapped audience to F1’s fanbase, but it also established F1 drivers as celebrities and heartthrobs worldwide. The skyrocketing US viewership led to Apple TV becoming an official broadcasting partner of Formula 1 in the region.
