When season 1 of The Night Manager first aired in 2016, it quickly became a huge hit. But despite its phenomenal success, the show did not immediately move forward with a second season. This was because John le Carré, whose 1993 spy novel of the same name inspired the show, was never in favour of continuing the story, despite studio executives wanting to cash in on the show’s popularity with a sequel.
But 10 years later, things have changed. In January 2026, after almost a decade, Jonathan Pine (played by Tom Hiddleston) marks his return with The Night Manager season 2. This time, however, the spy thriller doesn’t have a novel to draw on.
According to the show’s lead producer, Stephen Garrett, speaking to The Observer, “Le Carré changed his mind shortly before he died five years ago. He was happy for us to do it.” The publication also reports that le Carré sanctioned a third season, for which a script is currently in development. Hopefully, it won’t take another 10 years to arrive.
Speaking of which, 10 years is a long time to remember the intricacies of a show — especially something as detailed as a spy thriller, where every scene and every line of dialogue holds meaning. Miss one detail and the plot can be lost.
So, if you’re looking to refresh your memory of The Night Manager season 1 before watching the sequel, here’s a recap to help.
The Night Manager season 1 recap: What happened in the show?

The Night Manager follows Jonathan Pine, a hotel night manager in Cairo. Haunted by his two-year service in Iraq, he is recruited by British Intelligence to infiltrate the inner circle of Richard Roper, a businessman trafficking illegal weapons under the guise of agricultural equipment.
So, how does Jonathan come to work for Richard? Let’s find out.
The inciting incident

While working in Cairo, Jonathan comes across a guest called Sophie Alekan, who gives him a list of weapons to be sold in a deal between Richard Roper and her boyfriend, Freddie Hamid (played by David Avery). She wants him to keep them safe in case something were to happen to her. Jonathan leaks the documents to the British Intelligence. Richard is alerted and calls off the deal with Freddie. The latter, angered, assaults Sophie, wanting to know who she gave the documents to.
As Jonathan helps Sophie escape, they begin a relationship, and he learns that her real name is Samira. Unable to leave the country, she is eventually murdered. Jonathan believes Freddie is responsible, but the police ignore him because the Hamid family wields immense power in the region.
Her death becomes the catalyst for Jonathan’s desire to take revenge on Richard.

Four years later
Four years after Sophie’s death in Cairo, Jonathan is working at a hotel in Switzerland. There, he encounters Richard, his family and associates. Driven by a need for justice, Jonathan steals their discarded SIM cards and hands them to intelligence officer Angela Burr.
Together, they launch Operation Limpet, under which Jonathan infiltrates Richard’s inner circle using a new identity with a criminal past designed to win his trust. To set the plan in motion, they stage an attempted kidnapping of Richard’s son, allowing Jonathan to “rescue” the boy and gain his confidence. The operation works: Jonathan is accepted into Richard’s inner circle.
Jonathan becomes Andrew Birch
Living with Richard, Jonathan meets the other members of his inner circle: Jed, Richard’s girlfriend (played by Elizabeth Debicki); Corky, his right-hand man (played by Tom Hollander); Sandy, his financial director (played by Alistair Petrie); and Sandy’s wife, Caroline (played by Natasha Little).
Jonathan gradually replaces Corky as Richard’s right-hand man. He gives Jonathan the identity of Andrew Birch to facilitate illegal arms sales. Meanwhile, Jonathan continues to pass crucial information to Angela. As time goes on, he and Jed begin a romance, unknown to Richard. Corky, an ever-suspicious pessimist, repeatedly warns Richard about Jonathan, but Richard ignores him.
One day, the group goes to “The Haven”, a military compound in Turkey where Richard’s people run weapons logistics while pretending it’s humanitarian aid work. There, Corky discovers Jonathan’s truth and tries to warn Richard, who is already suspecting Jed of being the mole. Jonathan kills Corky and pins the blame of being the traitor on him. That night, Jonathan sends details of the “aid convoy” to Angela, who uses her US contact, Joel (played by David Harewood), to get the military to inspect the trucks. The trucks contain no weapons, and Richard escapes once again.
Then, they all head to Cairo.
Moles at MI6 and CIA
Meanwhile, on Angela’s side of things, Jonathan frequently sends information, and they discover that two high-ranking British intelligence and CIA officers have been helping Roper in exchange for hefty commissions. In Roper’s documents, they are listed under code names: “Halo” is Geoffrey Dromgoole (played by Tobias Menzies) from MI6, and “Felix” is Barbara Vandom (played by Sara Stewart) from the CIA.
Angela is also helped by Richard’s lawyer, Juan Apostol (played by Antonio de la Torre), who provides the missing links and is later killed by Roper.
Afraid of being exposed, Geoffrey has Angela’s operation shut down by transferring her staff, as well as her superiors. Left hopeless in her empty office, with just one person there to help her, Angela is about to head out. However, her phone rings. When she picks it up, Jonathan tells her that they are all back in Cairo, where it all started.

The Night Manager season 1 ending explained: What happens in Cairo?

In Cairo, Roper tells Pine that they will be meeting his other associate, Freddie Hamid, who will help facilitate an arms deal with Mr Barghati (played by Nasser Memarzia). Jonathan is worried that Freddie will recognise him. Freddie thinks he has met Jonathan before, but the latter brushes it off. That night in Cairo, he drugs Freddie’s drinks at the casino until he can barely stand, then takes him back to his house and questions him about Sophie. Freddie admits that Richard ordered Sophie’s death. Jonathan then strangles Freddie and drowns him in the pool.

How does Jonathan Pine stop the weapons deal?
Earlier that night, Jonathan asks Jed to get the code to Richard’s hotel-room safe so Angela can retrieve the deal documents. After returning from Freddie’s house, he collects the documents from reception. He then travels with members of the Muslim Brotherhood to the weapons compound, where they tamper with the arms. Jonathan is given a number to dial that will trigger an explosion.
The next morning, Jonathan empties the company account where Richard had received the first half of Mr Barghati’s payment.
Does Richard Roper catch Jed betraying him?
After tampering with the weapons, Jonathan sends the documents back to Richard’s room on a breakfast trolley. When Jed tries to return them to the safe, she realises he has changed the code. As she turns around, Richard is there and finally catches her. He then orders one of his henchmen to torture her.
What happens at the deal?
Jonathan goes to the weapons compound with Richard to finalise the deal with Mr Barghati, unaware that Richard already knows he has betrayed him. He tells Jonathan that Jed has been captured and that her life depends on Pine helping him complete the deal.
Once the deal is done and the weapon-laden trucks begin to leave the compound, Jonathan dials the code given to him by the Brotherhood, and the trucks explode one by one. Furious, Mr Barghati demands a refund, only to find the company account is empty.
Barghati storms off, insisting they meet at the hotel in an hour. Jonathan then tells Richard he will return the money if he lets Jed go.
What happens at the hotel?
Back at the hotel, Angela is attacked by one of Richard’s henchmen, but she shoots him and escapes with Jed.
When Richard returns to his room, Angela is waiting for him. She tells him he is about to be arrested and that Jed is free. Richard calls Dromgoole, but he does not answer, having previously been blackmailed into withdrawing his support. Joel arrives with the police, and they arrest Richard for attempted murder and breaching import laws.
Richard remains blasé, convinced he will get bail. But as he is loaded into a police van, Mr Barghati and his men hijack it. Richard screams, realising that a fate worse than death awaits him.
The Night Manager season 1 recap: What happens to Jonathan Pine ultimately?
After Richard is taken away, Jonathan and Jed finally get together. By morning, however, Jed leaves for America to be with her son. Before she goes, she tells Jonathan he should come to visit soon.
Pine heads back into the hotel. When the manager asks whether he needs anything, he replies, “Nothing at all.”
