accused of stealing

Furnishing my new home

My husband and I had just finished renovating the house we bought in Subang Jaya. I was out buying the furniture we’d agreed on from a large home furnishing store. I had just paid for the entire dining room set, everything from the table, chairs and sideboard to the tablecloths, napkins and cutlery.

I was a normal paying customer. I wasn’t carrying a handbag. I had my phone, wallet and keys in my pockets. The bill at checkout came to over RM5,000. I tapped my card, took my receipt and was ready to leave.

Then an employee stopped me.

An employee stopped me

He told me he had been watching me while I was browsing because I had been “acting suspicious”. Then he wanted me to empty my pockets. I stared at him for a long moment, trying to process the fact that he genuinely suspected I had stolen something. I thought this was a joke.

What did he think I had stolen? I wasn’t carrying a handbag or backpack or a shopping bag. After what I just spent, this employee wanted me to empty my pockets?

I flipped the script

I asked him directly if he thought I had stolen something. He threatened to call security if I didn’t empty my pockets. So I told him: “CALL SECURITY AND MANAGEMENT. NOW!” I raised enough of a commotion that people started looking over.

I wanted security there. I wanted his supervisor. I demanded the manager. If he genuinely believed I had stolen something, I wanted everyone responsible for dealing with that accusation standing there with us.

I made the accusation public

Security and the manager eventually came over. I immediately explained what had happened. “He accuses me of stealing!” There were already other customers nearby watching. The employee now had to explain his accusation in front of his manager and a small audience. And incredibly, the manager backed the employee up and also asked me to empty my pockets.

I decided to show everyone exactly what I was carrying. I emptied my pockets right there: Phone. Wallet. Keys. That’s it. There was nothing to find.

“Full Refund. Now.”

At that point, I wasn’t interested in arguing with the employee about whether he had made a mistake. I looked at the manager, who looked rather embarrassed, and said: “I want a full refund. Now.”

I had spent more than RM5,000. Now I wanted every ringgit back. The employee’s attitude changed almost immediately. He started saying that he was only doing his job and tried to explain that he wasn’t accusing me of anything. Then he started worrying about what returning more than RM5,000 worth of purchases would mean for him.

I looked at him like he was crazy. “You and your manager accuse me of stealing. What did you think I stole? A dining table in my underwear and six chairs in my bra, ke?”

The manager tried to calm me and de-escalate the situation. I wasn’t interested in being placated. I told them that if they refused to refund me, I would take the matter further, including disputing the credit-card transaction and making a police report about what had happened.

When they tried to explain themselves again, I had reached the end of my patience with their excuses and apologies. I started video recording and said: “Nak jadi LOTUS’S 2.0?” That shut everyone up. Completely. They refunded my entire purchase.

I hadn’t caused this situation. I walked into the store, selected my furniture, paid for it and tried to leave. They stopped and accused me.

They lost more than RM5,000 that day

My husband and I had just renovated our entire house. We still needed furniture and other things for three bedrooms, the bathrooms, the living room and the rest of the house. RM5,000 was just the first planned purchase: We had roughly RM30,000 in spending planned for our house.

One employee had managed to turn a customer who was already spending more than RM5,000 into someone who didn’t want to give them another ringgit. The manager seemed to understand the scale of what had just happened. He apologised. He offered free delivery and assembly. He offered a discount.

I wasn’t interested. I told him I would furnish my home somewhere else. If another store charged me a little more, so be it. I wouldn’t take their furniture if they paid me.

I filed a formal complaint

I didn’t just walk away angry. I filed a formal complaint with Corporate. I explained in detail what happened. I expected someone to acknowledge the complaint and take the incident seriously. I waited for a response. I got nothing. Not even a template acknowledgement.

At this point, I’m assuming my complaint probably got lost somewhere in the digital tong sampah. And that’s the part that still bothers me. I wasn’t trying to get anyone fired. I wasn’t asking for free furniture. I wasn’t looking for compensation.

I was furnishing my new home. I had already spent more than RM5,000 with them and was prepared to spend roughly RM30,000 in total. All they had to do was let me pay for my furniture and leave. Instead, they treated me like a thief. So I took my money somewhere else.
