KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia bids farewell to one of its greatest Paralympic icons as Ridzuan Puzi draws the curtain on a remarkable career that reshaped the nation’s standing in para athletics on the world stage.
The Rio 2016 Paralympic champion, fondly known as “Dek Wan”, has called time on a glittering journey spanning more than a decade — one defined by resilience, historic breakthroughs, and global success.
National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Jefri Ngadirin said discussions have already been held regarding Ridzuan’s next steps through the National Athlete Career and Education Secretariat (MACE).
“We have gone through the post-career process with him and discussed his direction moving forward. If he is interested in coaching, we have encouraged him to take the relevant courses.
“The decision is entirely his, whether to remain in sport as a coach or explore a different path. Our role is to provide guidance and support,” said Jefri when contacted.
He added that the NSC deeply appreciates Ridzuan’s immense contributions to the nation and wishes him continued success in whatever path he chooses.
Even as the curtain falls on Ridzuan’s illustrious career, attention has already shifted towards the future, with the NSC committed to nurturing the next generation of para athletes.
Jefri noted that emerging talents have begun gaining exposure at international meets, including the recent Asean Para Games in Korat.
“We are focusing on our upcoming talents. They have already been given opportunities to compete and gain experience.
“God willing, we will produce our next champion at future Paralympic Games,” he said.
At 38, Ridzuan leaves behind a legacy etched in history. He became the first Malaysian to win a Paralympic gold medal in athletics when he stormed to victory in the men’s 100m T36 (cerebral palsy) event in Rio, a defining moment that elevated the country’s profile in para sports and inspired a generation.
Born in Padang Besar, Perlis, Ridzuan was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age. What could have been a limitation instead became the foundation of an extraordinary rise built on discipline, determination, and unyielding ambition.
He announced himself on the international stage at the 2011 Asean Para Games before quickly emerging as one of the world’s top sprinters.
His progress was underlined by a gold medal at the 2015 World Para Athletics Championships, cementing his reputation in the T36 category.
His dominance reached its peak at the 2018 Asian Para Games, where he captured multiple gold medals and set a world record in the 100m T36, one of the most outstanding feats in Malaysian para athletics history.
Beyond his achievements on the track, Ridzuan’s influence extended far deeper.
He became a symbol of perseverance, proving that physical limitations are no barrier to excellence while inspiring countless young para athletes to chase their ambitions.
Ridzuan may have stepped off the track, but his legacy as a trailblazer and inspiration will continue to shape Malaysian para sport for years to come. - April 3, 2026
