A longer working life could be down to good sleep in middle age

  • Research from Finland indicates that maintaining good sleep habits in middle age can help older adults remain in the workforce for longer.
  • Regularly disturbed sleep or sleeping for nine hours or more per night was linked to leaving employment up to nine months earlier.
  • Professional women reporting no sleep disturbances had the longest working life expectancy of almost 14 years from age 50.
  • Men in routine roles with low education levels who slept for more than nine hours a night had the shortest working life expectancy of six years and five months.
  • Researchers suggested that supporting good-quality sleep of recommended durations could help older people to continue working.
