A magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes Japan’s Ryukyu Islands

A MODERATE magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the Ryukyu Islands in Japan at 4.33am today, with no tsunami threat to Malaysia detected in an initial assessment by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

The department said the epicentre was located at 29.5 degrees North and 130.6 degrees East, about 231 kilometres south of Kagoshima, Japan.

According to MetMalaysia’s National Weather and Earthquake Operations Centre (POCGN), the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 40 kilometres.

MetMalaysia said its initial assessment found that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia. - September 13, 2026
