A photo showing three healthcare workers from different ethnic backgrounds standing by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s side has gained widespread attention online, with many Malaysians describing it as a touching symbol of unity.
The image was initially highlighted by health advocacy platform Public Health Malaysia, which said the three healthcare workers were of Malay, Chinese and Indian backgrounds and were accompanying Dr Mahathir while monitoring and caring for him.
‘A reflection of Malaysia’s diversity’
Former Health director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also shared the image on Facebook, praising the healthcare workers for remaining by Dr Mahathir’s side.
He described the trio as a powerful reflection of Malaysia’s diversity, united by the same responsibility of caring for a patient.
As Malaysians worry and pray for Tun Mahathir’s health, three dedicated healthcare workers from IJN, one Malay, one Chinese and one Indian stand by his side.

Public Health Malaysia similarly said that while their different backgrounds may appear coincidental, the image symbolically reflected Malaysians coming together to care for Dr Mahathir during a difficult period.
The photo has since been widely shared online, garnering over 121k reactions on Facebook, along with messages of appreciation for the healthcare workers and their dedication.
Standing by Mahathir during difficult time
The image emerged as Dr Mahathir mourned the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, who died at the National Heart Institute on Sept 28 at the age of 100.
Dr Siti Hasmah, herself a doctor and prominent public health advocate, had been married to Dr Mahathir for more than seven decades.
Public Health Malaysia had earlier shared another tribute showing Dr Mahathir grieving the loss of his wife, describing the moment not through his role as a former prime minister but simply as a husband saying goodbye to his lifelong partner.
During this difficult period, the three healthcare workers were seen remaining close to him, providing medical care and support.
M’sians touched by image
The photo also drew emotional reactions from Malaysians, with many saying the scene reflected both national unity and the grief surrounding Tun Dr Siti Hasmah’s passing.
One commenter said the loss felt deeply personal, writing: “It feels like losing our own mother.”
Another wrote that Tun Siti Hasmah felt like “a mother figure whom we only knew from afar”, but whose warmth and kindness still found a place close to many Malaysians’ hearts.
Others were touched by the reaction of the medical team, with one noting that one of the doctors was crying incessantly.
Another comment summed up the sense of unity reflected in the image: “This is the spirit of Malaysians. Regardless of race, we are here for one another.”
The commenter also thanked the doctors and offered condolences to Dr Mahathir and his family.
For Dr Noor Hisham, the photo was a reminder of how Malaysians can come together regardless of race when caring for someone in need.
