For Muslims, dates are a traditional food for breaking the fast during Ramadan. They are nutritious, delicious & hold significant cultural and religious importance. Photo: Zarina

Ramadan is a month in which Muslims give up food and drink during daylight hours. No words can adequately convey the joy a Muslim feels in Ramadan. It is the holy month we have looked forward to all the year round. It is a secret that only Muslims can share, and its blessings are indescribable. The 4th pillar of Islam, fasting during the month of Ramadan strengthens the Muslim believer & deepens his faith. For me, it is responding to the command of Allah, I am disciplining my body, thinking about those less fortunate than myself.

No words can adequately convey the joy a Muslim feels in Ramadan. It the sacred holy month that we have looked forward to all year round. It is a secret that only Muslims can share, and its blessings are indescribable. The 4th pillar of Islam, fasting during the month of Ramadan strengthen the Muslim believer and deepens our faith. In responding to the command of Allah, I am disciplining my body, thinking about those less fortunate than me, and renewing the principles & the practice of my faith. I want ro turn to a different image.

Based on Islamic teaching, Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) , used to break the fast each day by first sipping some water or milk and then eating dates. Most Muslims imitate the Prophet in doing this. A very strong brotherhood of all Muslims is evident. The first sip of water, the first bite of dates, are accompanied by prayer of gratefulness to Allah the Almighty.

I was touched when CPA S. Suppiah, Chairman of our book project “The Malaysia Airlines We Built: The Journey of an award-winning international airline. A collection of behind-the-scenes stories” presented the imported package of dates from Tunisia as Ramadan gift.

It has been our long standing practice among MAS retirees to interact between colleagues of different faiths, understand better each other religious beliefs & explore areas for lessening the distinctiveness of traditions. I remember during the Golden Era of MAS with 20,000 workforce cut across 6 continents of the world, we had then achieved a form of cooperation in the spirit of interfaith harmony.
