On 03 January 2023, Nurul Izzah Anwar was appointed as Anwar’s senior advisor on finance and economics. Even though Nurul had agreed to work pro bono for the government, many were very concerned. Her appointment had resulted in much criticism from all sides. Some were quick to see it as nepotism and commented on her lack of specific background in economics or finance which might result in bad policies for Malaysia.
As reported in The Sun Daily, on 12 February Nurul confirmed that she no longer holds that portfolio. Instead, upon Mr. Hassan Marican’s (Chairman of Advisory Committee) invitation, she will be joining the secretariat formed by the advisory panel for the finance ministry as the co-chair. I am sure many will agree that this is definitely a better and wise choice.
Quoting Dr William Menninger, “Six essential qualities that are the key to success: Sincerity, personal integrity, humility, courtesy, wisdom, charity.” Ms. Nurul has shown many of these qualities. She has also proven her character and capabilities in many aspects as a politician. In this particular decision, I would say that she has shown great maturity and humility, putting the nation first. She will definitely be a great asset to Malaysia as co-chair of the advisory panel for the finance ministry.
To Ms. Nurul, thank you for putting Malaysia first. Do continue to use all your talents and contribute towards the progress of the nation without fear or favor. We believe you will be a great blessing to this nation.
Definitely, Malaysia is not short of capable leaders who can impact our nation. I hope our Prime Minister will be on a continuous lookout for talented men and women, hear them out and give them a chance to prove themselves so that Malaysia will have a new breed of selfless leaders to spur the nation forward in every aspect.
