As Chairman of Persatuan Aeroangkasa Myaerosatu, I am familiar with the functions of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), a primary trade association for scheduled international airlines in the Asia-Pacific region. Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, AAPA represents carriers accounting for about one-fifth of global passenger traffic and one-third of global cargo traffic. The not-for-profit organization advocates for member interests to governments, manufacturers, and airport authorities, focusing heavily on safety, security, sustainability, and regulatory issues. Collectively, Asia Pacific carriers achieve significant scale, recently generating over US$12 billion in combined net profits amid strong demand and high fuel prices. (https://www.aapairlines.org)
The AAPA and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) maintain a highly collaborative, non-competitive relationship focused on driving global aviation standards while protecting specific regional interests. While IATA serves as the overarching global body for airline industry, AAPA acts as the specialized, localized voice voice for carriers operating within the Asia-Pacific region. Most of AAPA's 18 member airlines, including Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines, are prominent members of IATA. I had golden opportunities to benefit from various AAPA programs during my tenure as Manager Management Development with Malaysia Airlines. Even though AAPA does not run a standalone, brick-and-mortar training academy or offer direct individual enrollment courses, however, it educational footprint focuses on standardizing regional guidelines, safety seminars, and industry-wide operational frameworks. Above all, I enjoyed its networking relationship.
On 1st April 2026, AAPA saw a change in leadership when Wong Hong took up the position of AAPA Director General, succeeding Subhas Menon, who had led the organization since 2020. Hong joined AAPA from Delta Air Lines, where had headed the airlines' operations in China and Singapore. Prior to that he had held senior roles at Singaporean airport ground services giant SATS and IATA. Myaerosatu is also looking forward to collaborate with AAPA.
