Speculation surrounding the possible resignation of PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang continues to grow, with party leaders urging patience until an official statement is made. While a recent retreat of the party’s top leadership in Kuala Terengganu fueled the rumours, those closest to Hadi maintain that any announcement should come from the man himself.
Bachok MP Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman, who previously served as Hadi’s political secretary, emphasized that although the retreat did take place, discussions primarily focused on the party’s strategic direction rather than leadership transitions. He noted that matters of succession are traditionally left to the party delegates during the muktamar, PAS’ annual assembly, and expressed confidence that the process would unfold in a calm and respectful atmosphere.
Mohd Syahir also addressed concerns over Hadi’s health, acknowledging that while the PAS leader is still actively engaging in lectures, meetings, and party affairs, his doctors have recommended that he cut back on strenuous outdoor or public-facing activities. He assured that Hadi continues to fulfill his responsibilities and remains in good spirits, with members and supporters alike praying for his continued well-being.
He drew parallels with past instances, such as the Marang parliamentary race, where Hadi initially showed reluctance to contest but ultimately followed the party’s decision. This, he suggested, illustrates the precedence of party consensus over personal inclination within PAS’ leadership culture.
Sinar Harian had earlier reported that Hadi, during the recent retreat at the Primula Hotel, hinted at stepping down due to health-related reasons. That remark is believed to have prompted internal discussions within the party, especially among the ulama faction, who are now said to be encouraging Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man to prepare to take on a more prominent role.
While no formal announcement has been made, the discussion has ignited wider conversation within PAS about succession planning and the future of the party’s leadership. Mohd Syahir, however, stressed that decisions of such gravity should be respected as part of the democratic process embedded in the party’s traditions, leaving it to the wisdom of the delegates to decide during the upcoming muktamar.
Until then, party leaders are deferring to Abdul Hadi himself to clarify his position, emphasizing unity and patience amid the swirling speculation.
