L’Occitane en Provence partners with Plastic Odyssey on its global mission to combat plastic pollution, sailing across the world to collect and transform plastic waste into sustainable building materials. One coastline at a time.
By 2050, the ocean could hold more plastics than fishes. That isn’t a prediction – it’s a wake-up call. But rather than sit back and watch it happen, Plastic Odyssey is tackling the crisis head-on. The global expedition travels the world, turning plastic waste into opportunity, proving that recycling can be more than just a buzzword: it can be a real, scalable solution.
And we got to experience it firsthand. L’Occitane en Provence, the main sponsor of Plastic Odyssey, invited us to join them in Penang for the Malaysia stopover. We stepped aboard the Plastic Odyssey ship, met the crew who have been at sea for three years and saw up close how they are giving plastic waste a second life.

A floating lab for innovation
Walking through the ship felt like stepping into the future of sustainability. This wasn’t just another awareness campaign; it’s real action. The crew isn’t just collecting plastic but also transforming it into something useful.
We watched as discarded plastic waste was processed and repurposed into roof tiles, building blocks and wood-like panels. You read that right: plastic that looks like wood. The best part? These upcycling techniques are designed to be low-cost and easily replicated in communities worldwide, making sustainable solutions more accessible than ever.
L’Occitane’s push for a plastic-free future
L’Occitane’s involvement with Plastic Odyssey is just one part of its bigger mission to fight plastic waste. In Malaysia, the brand has been leading the charge with its Big Little Things (BLT) Recycling Program, which has already collected over 4.9 million empty beauty products and diverted 260 metric tonnes of waste from landfills.
Beyond that, L’Occitane is also backing the Penang No Plastic Bag Every Day Campaign 2025, encouraging Malaysians to ditch single-use plastics for good. On the trip, we saw just how committed they are. After all, they are not just talking about change but actually making it happen.
Engaging the Penang Community
During the Penang stopover, the Plastic Odyssey team, in collaboration with L’Occitane, engaged with local stakeholders to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution. Workshops and demonstrations showcased practical recycling solutions — emphasising that even small, consistent efforts can lead to significant environmental impact.
A call to action
Our experience aboard the Plastic Odyssey was both enlightening and inspiring. It reinforced the notion that while large-scale initiatives are crucial, individual actions play an equally vital role in combating plastic pollution. By embracing sustainable habits and supporting innovative solutions, each of us can contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.
