About 492 climbers prepare to scale Mount Everest this month

  • Hundreds of climbers are attempting to scale Mount Everest this month despite an unstable ice block, high travel costs, and increased permit fees.
  • About 492 climbers and an equal number of Nepali guides are preparing for the ascent during an anticipated window of good weather.
  • A massive and unstable serac, or ice block, in the Khumbu Icefall stalled climbers for over two weeks, preventing them from moving further up the peak.
  • The Khumbu Icefall is a constantly shifting glacier with deep crevasses and large pieces of overhanging ice, making it one of the most challenging sections to climb.
  • While the number of US and European climbers has decreased, there has been a rise in Asian climbers, with all attempts this year being made from the Nepal side as China's route is closed.
