FILIPINO karateka June Marie Adriano snared a bronze medal in the 20th Asian Games women’s kumite -50-kilogram (kg) class after defeating Taiwanese Chung Ya-Chi, 10-3, in the battle for third place at the Toyohashi Gymnasium in Japan on Wednesday.
Adriano gave the Philippines its fifth medal in the continental meet following one silver and three bronzes.
The 22-year-old Adriano started her campaign with a 4-3 win over Cambodian Srey Phea Chonn followed by a 4-0 victory over South Korean Yang Yewon to enter the semifinal.
Adriano yielded to Tsang Yee Ting of Hong Kong, 4-5, in the semis before bouncing back against Chung in the battle for bronze.
Meanwhile, Filipino tankers Xiandi Chua and Gian Santos advanced to the women’s 400-meter (m) individual medley and men’s 200-m freestyle medal rounds, respectively, at the Tokyo Aquatics Center.
Chua timed 4:51.93 to finish seventh in the heats of her category, while Santos clocked 1:49:34 to place eighth in his preliminaries.
The top 10 swimmers in both events advanced to the final.
Santos entered another final by making the medal round of the mixed 4x100-m medley relay alongside Logan Noguchi, Heather White and Teia Salvino.
The quartet posted a total of 3:57.12 and finished seventh in the 14-country heats, where the top eight advanced to the final.
