LONG before the likes of Anggun, Yuna and many other Southeast Asian singers made their mark on the international recording scene, Malaysian vocal powerhouse Datuk Aishah had already carved her own path abroad together with her New Zealand-based band, The Fan Club. Discovered while pursuing her studies in New Zealand, the group not only dominated the charts in both New Zealand and Malaysia but also achieved international recognition when their music broke into the prestigious American Billboard and American Top 40 charts.
Upon returning to Malaysia, Aishah continued building an impressive solo career, releasing numerous albums and recording close to 180 songs, many of which went on to become enduring Malay classics that cemented her status as one of the country's finest vocalists.
And over the recent weekend, the singer—now proudly bearing the title Datuk—once again reminded audiences why she remains a musical force to be reckoned with after four decades in the industry, delivering an evening filled with nostalgia, emotion and exceptional vocals at her concert, Aishah: 40 Chapters of Love, held at Megastar Arena Kuala Lumpur.
Organised by Vox Nation Live, the almost three-hour concert celebrated the many chapters of Aishah's remarkable musical journey, taking fans through different stages of her career with a repertoire that stretched from her early English recordings to patriotic numbers, heartfelt ballads and energetic dance classics.
From the opening medley of Camar Yang Pulang, Tiada Duka, Never Gave Up On You and Jari-Jariku Sakit Semua, it was immediately evident that Aishah's voice has lost very little of the power, clarity and control that made her one of Malaysia's premier vocalists. Throughout the evening, she effortlessly navigated demanding melodies and soaring high notes, proving that great singers only become more accomplished with time.
The concert continued with familiar favourites including Kau Sahabat, Kekasih & Teman, Kasih Kita and Kau Yang Teristimewa, before shifting into a patriotic segment featuring Tari Silat Melayu, Lambaian Nogori and Bahtera Merdeka. Emotional performances of Fatwa Pujangga, Di Mana Ku Cari Ganti, Ayah and Syurga Di Telapak Kaki Ibu further showcased her ability to connect deeply with audiences through storytelling and heartfelt delivery.
One of the evening's highlights came when rock singer Ara Johari joined Aishah on stage for a duet of Kemaafan Dendam Yang Terindah, one of Aishah's signature hits. The collaboration felt particularly fitting, as Ara recently recorded a contemporary pop-rock version of the song that was warmly received by listeners, making her an ideal choice to revisit the classic alongside its original singer.
Ara later remained on stage to perform her own hit, Menjaga Jodoh Orang Lain, adding another memorable moment to the night's celebrations before Aishah returned with more favourites including Bayangan, You've Got A Friend, Di Antara Cinta & Kasih and Wanita.
Aishah also demonstrated her versatility by seamlessly switching between genres. Her stirring rendition of One Moment In Time reminded audiences of her impressive vocal range before she transformed the arena into a lively celebration with energetic performances of Sensation, Call Me, I Feel Love and Don't Let Me Fall Alone which were plucked from her international days with The Fan Club.
She even performed her Aidilfitri hits namely Pulanglah and the festive favourite Setitis Cahaya Di Aidilfitri.
Naturally, the evening reached its emotional peak when she performed Janji Manismu, prompting a massive singalong from fans who have grown up with the timeless hit over the past several decades.
Behind the scenes, respected music director Sharon Paul deserves much credit for breathing fresh life into many of Aishah's classics. The updated arrangements managed to sound contemporary without sacrificing the essence of the original songs, giving audiences a refreshing way to experience familiar material.
Having said that, devoted fans—including this writer—could not help but feel slightly disappointed by the absence of several of Aishah's biggest Malay hits. Songs such as Selanjur Bercinta, Merenung Bulan and especially the iconic Cinta Beralih Arah, which won the prestigious Anugerah Juara Lagu and further cemented her place among Malaysia's musical elite, would undoubtedly have elevated an already memorable evening into an even more complete celebration of her illustrious career.
Still, such omissions do little to diminish what was ultimately a fitting tribute to one of Malaysia's most accomplished singers.
Forty years after first stepping into the spotlight, Aishah continues to command the stage with the same grace, confidence and vocal excellence that first captivated audiences decades ago. In an era where live vocals are increasingly scrutinised, she once again demonstrated why true artistry stands the test of time—and why her place among Malaysia's greatest vocalists remains undisputed.
