UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has posed a critical question to party members: Who among them is brave enough to stand by their leaders in the face of heavy criticism? Speaking at a Kota Melaka UMNO event, Zahid emphasized the importance of vocal support over mere participation in viral issues, particularly in garnering voter support.
In his address, Zahid highlighted the evolving landscape of Malaysian politics, where issues and public sentiment play pivotal roles in shaping electoral outcomes. He underscored the necessity for UMNO to adapt to this new political reality, moving beyond traditional models focused solely on developmental agendas.
"Today's politics revolves around addressing pertinent issues and understanding voter sentiment," Zahid remarked, as reported by Bernama. His remarks aimed to galvanize UMNO members towards proactive engagement in current political discourse rather than reactive responses to viral trends.
Addressing recent setbacks, Zahid reassured UMNO supporters that the loss in Sungai Bakap did not signify the collapse of political alliances within the unity government framework. He maintained optimism about UMNO's future electoral prospects, asserting that the party remains steadfast in its commitment to contest upcoming by-elections with renewed vigor.
"We acknowledge the outcome in Sungai Bakap as the people's decision. However, this setback does not mark the end for any candidate aligned with the unity government," Zahid affirmed. The recent victory by Perikatan Nasional in Sungai Bakap, where PAS secured a substantial majority, highlighted ongoing challenges and opportunities for UMNO to strategize effectively.
Looking ahead, Zahid disclosed UMNO's plans to contest the Nenggiri state seat in Kelantan, a stronghold of Perikatan Nasional. This strategic move aims to strengthen UMNO's presence in the region and capitalize on electoral opportunities amidst shifting political dynamics.
The Election Commission has scheduled the Nenggiri by-election for August 17, with candidate nominations slated for August 3 and early voting on August 13. This follows the declaration of the seat's vacancy and underscores UMNO's proactive approach to reclaiming political ground.
